Layering The Stylish Way
It’s quite a sunny day in Nairobi, staring at my watch I can’t seem to do anything; my calm demeanor disappears for a while and all these thoughts are rushing through my mind. I have an hour to get through the city in time for my meeting with Max of La Elegance photography in a cool hideout just a few kilometers from the city Centre. The sun is slowly fading and losing its command over us and it hits me my data bundles are low so I can’t really get to the location without the help of this mobile app. You’re right, google is my friend bruh! “Darn, I never seem to do anything on time.” I think out loud as I hurriedly carry my outfits out of my closet and throw them in the back seat as I try to get a hold of my phone, someone’s calling.
I fumble and finally get a grip of it. It’s Max on the line, “Yo! Bro, how far are you? These guys only allow us so much time and you know white guys don’t play about their time.” “FUCK!” I sigh as I assure him I’ll make it in time and hung up. I manage to squeeze all my outfits into the vehicle and drive off only to be caught up in the rush hour traffic. Oh, GOD! Now I have to come up with a better excuse, I think to, myself. Luckily it opens up and next thing I’m in town and somehow find my way out of the city to the location with the help of my friend, you know; google maps. I arrive at the location and my oh my! The serenity of this place is so refreshing, you could tell this wasn’t your ordinary hang out joint. I get past the guard and he respectfully helps me secure a parking spot. I hit up my boy Max and he comes from a far looking quite confused as well.
“Thanks for pulling up bro, welcome to The Shamba.” he says trying to sound assuring as he complimented my look but I could tell he wasn’t at ease. What a cool name for such a cool place, right? He’s draped in a blue-grey dress shirt, a pair of cool blue denim jeans and Chelsea boots. Typical for a stylish professional photographer ready to take Steve McCurry out of business. It’s around 6PM and the sun is lazily trying not to set but it’s about that time. He explains that we’ve got an hour before guests start arriving and we can’t continue. To add salt to injury he ran out of battery charge and he somehow forgot to pack his charger while coming there. What a waste! I thought. “It’s all good though, I can rush back to town and pick one from a friend.” Finally, some hope, I thought to myself. He said that as he stroked his beard looking to be deep in thought.
“We’ve got no time, let’s rush and come back.” he muttered. We manage to beat traffic and get to town, he picks up the charger and an extra camera and we drive back. All this time I had been ignoring my girlfriends text in which she was all in her feelings trying to convince me to meet up with her in town despite being aware of the situation. I share it with max and we both are mind blown about how women can be crazy and convince ourselves that without the grind we wouldn’t have these ladies anyway and engage in how they aren’t all that important at this stage in life as we laughed it off. Before we know it we’re back at the location. My stomach rumbles as the sweet aroma from the kitchen section hit my nose; that must have been a cue from my soldiers that I need to try some dishes from the new joint. He rushes to set up as I get into my first outfit.
