CLASSIC MEN'S WEAR

Layering The Stylish Way
Layering is one of the most efficient ways to tell a stylish man; one you may even consider a guru, from a regular dresser. Before we break all this down we may want to know what layering means. According to Wikipedia they describe layering outfits as “a term describing a way of dressing using many garments that are worn on top of each other. Some of the layers have different, largely non-overlapping, functions. Using more or fewer layers, or replacing one layer but not others, allows for flexible clothing to match the needs of each situation.” That simply describes layering to the letter. Oblivious to many we layer every day or at least frequently. This is influenced by different reasons from natural occurrences such as the weather to the need to achieve a certain look or outfit. It goes without saying due to the nature of classic menswear the choice of specific types of layering may make or break your outfit. With that said let’s decipher this concept of dressing that may seem like a daunting task to some gentlemen.
First things first, it’s important to note that a number of items in your closet can be layered when it comes to classical men’s wear like knitwear; comprising of cardigans and sweaters, vests, scarves, overcoats, jackets etc. There are two ways in which we can layer our outfits i.e. invisible layering and visible which can be easily derived from the name with invisible being the items that may be worn inside and not visible like vests and tees while visible being the extra pieces which you throw on top to enhance our outfits. While layering there are also specific styles we may settle for one being monochromatic where same color outfits are preferable. This however may pose a challenge as one has to be careful about the colors they pick. You may want to go for lighter color shades if you’re of a dark skin tone and a darker shade for light skin tone, although I’d recommend a lighter color shade generally. You may opt for lighter shades of grey and blue or black for lighter skin tone. It may be an issue when one item is darker e.g. Your tie may be darker than your suit and maybe darker than your shirt. The overall visual presentation of that may appear off and so it’s discouraged.

You can create more visual interest by playing with different colors, preferably two to three colors and if you’re out to turn heads may go for the fourth at maximum. It’s also advisable not to have two items against each other that are of similar color shades, unless you can pull it off well. If you’re the conservative type it would be wise to go for a combination of menswear colors that are known to go together e.g. blue tie and grey suit jacket or white dress shirt and brown jacket. Another option may be to alternate solid colors and patterned fabric. This has been used by style enthusiasts for as long as classic menswear has existed. Better still you may want to have a checked tie, solid breast coat and a checked suit. Either way it breaks monotony and reduces the risk of looking clueless, remember, you can only make one first impression and you never know when your next opportunity may come your way.

What have you learnt that you didn't know? What would you like to add? Kindly let me know in the comments. Part three soon come. Meanwhile stay safe and look out for each other.
