It’s important to consider the fabric texture as that’s where the men are separated from the boys.
For a less official look you may consider layering by having two to three patterns in a row which is quite risky but worth the juice. This can be pulled off effortlessly by simply adding a solid layer to tone the outfit down. Sometimes a combination of patters may be confusing to the eye and one may end up getting stares for the wrong reason. You don’t want to misinterpret that hot girl’s stare for an attraction all the while your outfits looking dingy! While dealing with patterns; settling for one may help, like say pinstripe all through. In this situation however, being keen to detail may suffice to help you standout. You must be careful for example not to have a pinstriped shirt plus a full pinstriped suit with the same color shades as it may look off. To elevate that look you may add a layer of solid color. The same goes for the spacing of the stripes, don’t have them too wide matched with close ones on a different item, you may pass for a freedom fighter that just got deported back home. Well, not quite accurate but you get it!
Layering with coordinating colors quite does the trick, say, orange ties and orange-brown patterned pocket square or having a pocket square with a bit of every color on the outfit. Inevitably it brings life to the whole outfit regardless of the color choice. It would also be easy by looking at how layers interact e.g. dark shirt and light ties work out well together. If you look at your outfit on the mirror and it makes you question the color coordination, chances are that your combination is off and you may want to reconsider your choice. It’s also important to consider the fabric texture as that’s where the men are separated from the boys. It would look oddly disturbing if you matched tweed and a knitted sweater and both are quite rough textures and that would break your look as there needs to be contrast which eventually is lost. To avoid that you may want to consider say tweed, knitted tie and solid colors for your breast coat and dress shirt. In simple terms always strive to go for fabrics that are both less loud and textured. As seen with patterns also avoid bringing same textures close and use solid colors to break the pattern.
With that said you may want to consider some items for layering -:
This may be considered the best clothing item for layering as far as classic men’s wear is concerned, I bet your grandfather can attest to this being one of the classical style especially among the royalty. This may be paired with a suit, sport coat or even a blazer. It gives a more sophisticated look yet effortless and worthy of respect.
Here we may consider sweaters and cardigans. These may be used interchangeably with the breast coat with these having quite some skill required to be pulled off correctly. While donning these it’s required that you unbutton the bottom button. For the sake of visual appeal and overall silhouette it’s advisable to go for fitted cardigans. It makes one look younger and of course its quite comfortable compared to one that may look stuffed into the suit jacket. I bet don’t want to look goofy when the boys come out to play. Other items to layer are scarves; that may be thrown on top of overcoat or hang on shoulders preferably patterned and light fabric, cravats, pocket squares, which shouldn’t be matched with ties, overcoats and Boutonniere/ lapel flowers. In conclusion layering may require one to be experimental and pay attention to what works for you. Again, layering doesn’t need a lot of pieces and it’s also advisable to keep it to a minimum of 4 at most. You may add accessories to make you outfit pop and lastly the thicker fabric should be the topmost with the interior being lighter. That’s basically how to layer classic menswear. I’ll be working on a casual menswear blog on the same so stay tuned. Meanwhile let me know what you think in the comments. Stay safe and look out for each other. Don’t forget to keep it classy!
